Sunnydae Schaeffer  von Houze ("Schaefer")
Am. CD, CGC, Can. CD, United CD

11 July 1998-24 February 2002

Schaefer was born on 11 July 1998 in Wacaunda, Illinois. He came to live with Bob & Yolanda Houze in Seattle in September 1998. Schaefer earned his American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title on 21 May 2000. The picture to the left  was taken just after he earned his United Kennel Club Companion Dog (United CD) title in one show at the Monroe Valley Dog Training Club's United Kennel Club Obedience Trials, Monroe, WA, 20-21 January 2001.  He earned his first leg toward his United Companion Dog Excellent (United CDX) at the Monroe Valley Dog Training Club's United Kennel Club Obedience Trials, Woodinville, WA, 26-27 May 2001. He earned his Canadian Kennel Club Companion Dog (Can. CD) title in one show at the Richmond Dog Fanciers Association's Canadian Kennel Club Obedience Trials, Richmond, BC, 23-24 June 2001. He earned his second leg toward his UCDX at the American Eskimo Dog Association of Washington All Breed Obedience Trial, 29 September 2001, Graham, Washington. He earned his first and second legs of his American Kennel club Companion Dog (CD) title at the Tacoma Kennel Club and Sammamish Kennel Club All Breed Obedience Trials, 11 and 12 January 2002, at Puyallup, Washington.  He earned the final leg of his CD at the Rose City Classic, Portland Dog Obedience Club Trial, Portland, Oregon, 19 January 2002.  Schaefer earned further Novice qualifying scores at the Seattle Kennel Club trials on 2 and 3 February 2002.  In his last trial he won a runoff against two other dogs to secure a fourth place finish. He was having a lot of fun at this show, and particularly enjoyed the applause after his performance in the ring. We had planned to begin showing in open in March, but on 15 February he was diagnosed with lymphosarcoma, and he died nine days later on 24 February 2002.

And we all knew one thing by being there.
The space we stood around had been emptied
Into us to keep, it penetrated
Clearances that suddenly stood open.
High cries were felled and a pure change happened.
