TRMM Tethered sonde team at Meck Island

Daily Activity Report for August 4

Flux tower measurement systems worked properly. Tethersonde operations were plagued by the malfunctioning of on-board humidity and, primarily, pressure sensors. Five flights were conducted (one extra flight was done at 300Z (Aug. 4) for sensor testing). The 500Z and 1100Z flights (Aug. 4) were satisfactory. Flights at 2300Z (Aug 3), 300Z (Aug. 4) and 1700Z (Aug. 4) experienced sensor malfunction, although ascent data were salvageable. Fair conditions prevailed and boundary layer heights ranged from 300 to 400m. Average potential temperature within the mixed layer during each flight was approximately 300.5 K while specific humidity varied between 19 and 22 g/kg.

Several figures describing the meteorological conditions at Meck Island during August 3-4 are provided on disk. Relative humidity varied from 82% at night to 59% during the day. Temperatures ranged from 300 K at night to 304 K during the day. Winds were primarily northeasterly, ranging from 4.8 to 8.1 m/s.
