TRMM Tethered sonde team at Meck Island
Daily Activity Report for August 6
Tethered balloon operations were normal. In total four tethered balloon soundings were done at 05:00, 11:00, 17:00 and 23:00 GMT. The main features revealed by such upper air data sets were mixed layer heights reaching circa 500 m. Such height remained almost the same for all the flights taken during this day. Within the mixed layer the potential temperature stayed around 300 K and specific humidity averaged 19 g per kg. In all flights the wind came from the sector NE to E and remained constant throughout both the measurement period and the 0-1200 m atmospheric layer.
Weather conditions at the Meck Island remained mostly undisturbed. Only a brief shower producing a trace amount of precipitation and with associated winds reaching 10 m per s was experienced around 02:25 GMT. On the 10-m tower, measured winds remained less than 10 m per s and came mostly from the northeast.
