TRMM Tethered Sonde Team, Meck Island
Daily Activity Report for August 14-15, 1999 (GMT)
Tower and radiation systems functioned properly. Four tethered balloon flights were conducted during the day (2000Z, 2300Z, August 14 and 0200Z, 0500Z (August 15). The 1100Z flight (August 15) was cancelled due to a forecast of heavy rain, while the 1700Z flight (August 15) was cancelled due to high winds (periodic gusts of 10 to 11 m/s). Boundary layer heights during the daytime flights varied from approximately 600m (morning) and 400m (afternoon). Average potential temperature in the mixed layer was approximately 300K while specific humidity varied from 18 to 21 g/kg. The 0500Z flight was conducted in the face of an approaching storm. Increases in specific humidity and equivalent potential temperature, as well as a decrease in potential temperature, are evident in the descent data.
Plots of microclimate data for August 13-14 GMT are included on disk. Relative humidity varied from nearly 85% during the evening to 60% during the day. Winds were primarily from the northeast with speeds of 3 to 10 m/s. Temperatures ranged from 300 to 303K.
