TRMM Tethered sonde team at Meck Island

Daily Activity Report for August 16

Tethered balloon operations were normal. Five profiles were taken at approximately 23Z on 8/15, and then at 2Z, 5Z, 11Z, and 17 Z on 16 Aug. The 11Z sounding on 16 August was delayed by approximately one-half hour due to high winds (12 m/s) and a warning from Aeromet predicting possible rain and high winds due to outflow from a series of relatively small, but intense, storms in the area. These storms bypassed the tethered balloon site, with gusts recorded at speeds of 20-24 knots.

The main features of the soundings include a mixed layer varying from between 100 m to approximately 500 m with potential temperatures varying between 300K and 304K. The specific humidity varied between 12 – 20 g/kg. The 11Z sounding varied most dramatically from the other soundings performed during the day: the boundary layer virtually disappeared as a result of mixing by the passing storms. This was the first observation of a shallow nocturnal stable boundary layer (100 m deep) during this project.
