TRMM Tethered Balloon Site: Meck Island

Daily Activity Report for August 23–24 GMT

Tower measurement systems are functioning, although salt contamination continues to be a problem, effecting primarily the power supply for the fans which aspirate the temperature and humidity sensors. The fans were not operating until they were repaired late in the afternoon. The radiometry was reinstalled at the dock at approximately 1:30pm. We will resume downloading radiation data this morning.

Tethersonde soundings were done at 2000Z and 2300Z on August 23, and 0200Z, 0500Z, 0800Z, 1100Z and 1700Z on August 24. The sonde pressure transducer experienced problems, most likely due to salt contamination. The flights at 2000Z and 2300Z on August 23 and at 0200Z, 0500Z and 0800Z on August 24 were all effected, even though the sensor was cleaned. Parts of several of the soundings were salvageable and are included on disk. The sonde was replaced with a spare unit for the 1100Z and 1700Z soundings. Good data was obtained on these flights (a rain shower at the end of the 1700Z sounding caused the sonde to malfunction, but a vast majority of the flight data are good).
