TRMM Tethered Balloon Site: Meck Island

Daily Activity Report for September 1-2 GMT

Tethersonde soundings were done at 0800Z and 2300Z on September 1, and at 0200Z and 0500Z on September 2. The 0800Z and 2300Z (September 1) and the 0200Z (September 2) soundings experienced problems with the pressure transducer. However, a majority of the data (at least the ascent data) were salvageable for these flights. A new sonde was obtained late in the day and was used for the 0500Z sounding (September 2). This flight was successful. No night flights were attempted due to helicopter activity, poor lighting and (primarily) surveillance activity for the Patriot missile mission.

Tower and radiation measurement systems functioned well. Microclimate data for August 31 – September 1 are included on disk. Air temperatures on Meck Island ranged from approximately 300K to 303K. Relative humidity varied from 64% to 85%. Winds were predominately easterly, with wind speeds ranging from approximately 1 to 8 m/s.
