TRMM Tethered Balloon Site: Meck Island

Daily Activity Report for September 4-5 GMT (a rough day)

Tethersonde operations were terminated at 0230Z on September 5. The main brake on the balloon winch broke during the 0200Z sounding while the balloon was on the descent (approximately 450 meters). The balloon was pulled down from that height by hand (seriously) and the sonde was successfully retrieved. The winch may be reparable, but not on such short notice.

In addition to the ultimate sounding, additional soundings were done at 2000Z, 2100Z and 2300Z on September 4. All soundings yielded good data.

For the most part, tower measurement systems functioned well. Microclimate data for Meck Island are included on disk. The air temperature record for this day is incomplete due to testing of two of the thermistors. As is evident in the temperature data, the thermistor at 5m is reading very high temperatures. Relative humidity varied from 70% to 86%. Winds were predominately easterly, with wind speeds averaging around 5 m/s.

Tower measurement systems will remain operational for the rest of the week. Dismantling of the Meck Island Measuring System will begin on Saturday, September 11.

Interesting factoids: 200.9 millimeters of rain were recorded on Meck Island on September 3-4. Approximately 750 mm of rain have been recorded since July 25,
