Questions on Humidity (Lecture 3.2)
1. When the first explorers arrived at Yellowstone it was winter. They did not see the geysers until they set up camp and began to cook. Why?
2. When you exhale, your warm, moist breath mixes with the air outside and cools. There are plenty of CCN in breath and in the environment. If the air is cold, you can 'see your breath', but not if the air is warm. Why?
3. Air parcels A and B are rising adiabatically in the atmosphere. In A the initial value of the R.H. is 0%, and in B it is 100%. Both contain CCN. After they are both at 1 km altitude, which is true?
(a) A is warmer than B
(b) A is cooler than B
(c) A and B have the same temperature
4. A cloudy air parcel mixes with its dry environment. Cloud and environment areat the same temperature before they mix. Mixing causes the cloud drops to evaporate. Does the mixed air (a) sink (b) rise or (c) remain where it is?
