Each session will be a mixture of traditional lecture and discussion.

Textbook: The Earth System: Kump, Kasting and Crane.Prentice Hall (KKC).

Student Responsibilities:

I. Reading: Students will be responsible for readings as assigned from the lecture notes, the web, and other sources.

II.Weekly Assignment: Each student will provide one question suitable for in-class discussion each week. There will be several homework sets throughout the quarter.

III. Projects: There will be several data collection and analysis projects under the direction of the T.A., to be summarized in one paper due at the end of the quarter.

IV. Examinations: There will be three in-class quizzes and one final examination.

Week 2: Global Energy Balance: The Greenhouse Effect (Ch 3).

Week 3: Atmospheric and Oceanic Circulations (Ch.4,5).

Week 4: Solid Earth Circulations (Ch. 6).

Week 5: The Carbon Cycle (Ch. 7).

Week 6: Evolution of the Atmosphere (Ch. 9).

Week 7: The Ice Ages (Ch. 11).

Week 8: Short-term Climate Variability: Global Warming. (Ch. 12,13).

Week 9: Ozone Depletion (Ch 14).
