Marine Biomass Marine biomass was affected in a number of ways as the ocean levels dropped. First, the decreased sea level allowed for increased mixing of nutrients into the surface waters from what had previously been the sea floor. The increased nutrient availability may have helped to stimulate oceanic life. Additionally, calcium carbonate producing organisms such as coral reefs were brought to the surface with the decrease in sea level. Surface exposure of these organisms contributed to the levels of atmospheric CO2. |
