ATM S 490: Atmospheric Analysis |
|
Winter Quarter 2012. Instructor: Greg Hakim Class meets: Tuesday 12:30-1:20. MGH 231. Class description: Reviews and analyzes current weather situation and forecast. Promotes active discussion between the leader and attendees, and provides exposure to practical aspects of forecasting, the structure of synoptic and local weather phenomena, and applications of basic meteorological concepts Note to students that are NOT Atmospheric Science majors: This class involves a technical discussion of current weather. We will use techniques to present and interpret weather information that are standard in atmospheric science, but at times will be hard for you to interpret. We will introduce these maps to you, but there will be times when you understand little of the technical discussion. Nevertheless, you should still be able to follow the general plot and major issues of each discussion. Evaluation: There will be a very short online quiz given after each discussion. The goals of the quiz are to: (1) check if you attended the discussion, and (2) check if you followed one of the main topics of the discussion. These quizzes are graded pass/fail, and students need to pass at least six quizzes to gain credit in the class. Don't forget to take the Moodle quiz after every weather discussion! The quiz will normally be available from approximately 2pm Tuesday through Wednesday evening. |
