Greetings, Wednesday 21 April 2004 I am disorganized today, and I left the email addresses of all of the people so far signed up for the trip at home. So far we have myself, Michelle Ward, Taubin Baker, Vance McDill, and two additional women on the trip. I expect that another person or two will try to get on the trip as the weekend approaches. Although I haven't been to Shi-Shi Beach before, my impression is that it is a pretty simple and rewarding trip. When I first communicated with each of you about the trip, I said that I would like to leave Seattle Friday evening in order to spend the most amount of time on the coast. I am now thinking that it would be good to get your input on this matter. I think that this is a pretty easy trip, and that people should just think of this as a trip to have fun rather than as an ardurous trip that will require us to be very focussed to be a success. So, there are 3 options that I can see. Please let me know which of thses options you prefer. One requirement we have is that we have to get a camping permit and bear cannisters in Port Angeles and the park service office hours are 8am to 4:30pm. One constant is that it takes 4 hours to drive from Kingston to the Makah Indian Reservation, where the hike begins. 1) Leave Seattle Friday night and either camp at Sequim Bay State Park http://www.camis.com/WA/camping/maps.asp?loc=213 or people could get a hotel in Port Angelese or Forks. So, leave Seattle at 7pm-ish on Friday, go to the park service office in Port Angelese at 8am, and be hiking at 11:30am Saturday. 2) Leave Seattle really early on Saturday (7:10am Kingston Ferry) and be hiking at 1pm Saturday. 3) Same as 2) but leave later Saturday morning. I would like to get this figured out by Thursday night, so please let me know your preference. If you feel strongly, please let me know that too. As a practical issue, there will be a an hour wait for the ferry on the way home, especially if the weather is good on Sunday. If we leave the Makah Indian Reservation at 2pm, we will wait an hour for the ferry, and get back to Seattle at 8:30pm on Sunday. This argues for staying at the beach longer so that we leave the reservation at 3pm and maybe don't have to wait an hour for the ferry. Equipment: Please let me know if your tenting preference: share or not share, how many people your tent holds. Please also let me know if you have a stove and water filter. We will figure out stoves and water filters at the trail head. There is a very muddy part of the trail. If you have gaiters, please bring them. If you don't have gaiters, please let me know, and I'll bring some garbage bags for improvised gaiters. Car pooling: Please let me know if you have a car and would be willing to drive, how many your car holds, whether you would like a ride, and what neighborhood you live in. The season ferry charges are in effect http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/schedules/upcoming/index.cfm?route=ed-king The roundtrip fare for 3 adults is $42 so it is pricey. The more we car pool, the more reasonable the costs will be. This Saturday is the beginning of peak season fares on the ferries. That is the information that I have for you tonight. Please send me your choice for when we travel, and your equipment and driving information. I will hopefully be more organized tomorrow, and I'll get the roster information out to you then. Please feel free to call me at work to discuss the trip. I will not be home Wednesday night.
