Atmospheric Sciences 101 - Weather Summer 2003
Class grading policy and exam schedule
Class grades will be determined by the following criteria:
30% - Midterm exam (in class Tuesday July 22)
30% - Final exam (in class Friday August 22)
40% - Combination of homeworks, quizzes, other activities
Final grades will be determined by a curve, most likely similar to that used for 101 courses during the other quarters, though those classes are 200+ students, and the summer class has 30-40.
Notes about the grading:
- Exams - The midterm will cover material from weeks 1-4 on the syllabus (assuming the schedule is maintained). The final will be cumulative in the sense that the material in this class builds upon itself, but it will be mostly drawn from subjects from the second half of the class. If you cannot make one of the exam dates, make plans with the instructor to take the exam before that time.
- Assignments - How the other 40% is broken down will depend on how many of these there are. Plans are for about 6 homework assignments, 4-5 quizzes, and some number of class activities. A rough estimate of how the 40% will break down is 20-25% homework, 10-15% quizzes, and ~5% participation
- Homework - Assignments will be made available on Wednesday of a week. They may cover material through the Monday or Tuesday of the following week. Homework will not be accepted any later than the end of class on Thursday the week following its being assigned. See the "Assignments" link to the left.
- Quizzes - Brief (~10-15 minutes) quizzes will be occasionally given, on average about once every two weeks or so. They are more likely to be on Fridays in section, but a few may be given in lectures. They will probably be announced a couple of days ahead of time (keep an eye on the class webpage), but unannounced quizzes are possible. The quizzes will be designed to review recently covered materials, but not to add significant extra studying.
- Some parts of homeworks and quizzes may be graded on a credit/no credit basis determined by whether reasonable effort was put into attempting to answer. Similarly, participation in class activities (i.e., being at class and taking part when they occur) will be on a credit/no credit basis.
- The grade from the assignments that is most detrimental to your overall grade will be dropped. That is one grade from the total of homeworks and quizzes (about 10 in all) not one homework plus one quiz.
