ScholarshipsA range of scholarships are available from the department, the UW Financial Aid Office, and from professional societies. By applying to all three sources, a student can substantially increase his or her chances of securing financial aid. Departmental Scholarships One merit-based Academic Achievement Scholarship is awarded each year to an Atmospheric Sciences major. These scholarships pay 1/3 of the student's tuition in each of Autumn, Winter and Spring quarters. If the recipients remain registered as Atmospheric Science majors and make satisfactory progress toward their Atmospheric Sciences degrees, their scholarships will be renewed annually, up to a maximum of four years. Both incoming freshman and students already in the program are eligible to apply. Every year we award at least one scholarship that will cover 1/3 of In-State tuition for a maximum of four years. Due to limited funds, awards to out-of-state students, covering 1/3 of Out-of-State tuition for a maximum of four years, are available roughly every other year. Out-of-state students are still welcome to apply for support at the in-state level in years when out-of-state awards cannot be funded.
These departmental scholarships are supported by the Bruce Caldwell Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Richard and Joan Reed Endowed Scholarship Fund.
University of Washington Financial Aid Each year the University of Washington awards over $20 million in financial aid to a significant fraction of the student body. Both need-based, merit-based scholarships and combinations thereof are available. For more information, please visit the Student Financial Aid website. Scholarships offered by professional societies A number of professional societies provide a range of scholarship opportunities, many of which are underutilized by current and incoming students--so take this seriously! The American Meteorological Society awards many undergraduate scholarships though the support of its members, corporations, and government agencies nationwide. Links to more detailed information are available here. The National Weather Association awards scholarships to students majoring in meteorology or a related field. Details are available here.
