Department Logo
Our logo was designed for us by Native American artist and UW Prof. Marvin Oliver (1946-2019). It shows the strength of the thunderbird (or in northern tribes the raven) over the earth/ocean, symbolized by the killer whale. The influence of human beings can be seen in the center of the logo. There are many native American narratives about the Thunderbird, a guardian spirit that has the power to invoke thunder, lightning, rain, snow, and hail. The Thunderbird, or Raven, symbolizes for us the atmosphere, and the Whale symbolizes the ocean below. Pictured in the belly of the whale is the human, surrounded by air, water, and the land.
