Four Atmospheric Sciences Graduate Students Receive Presentation Awards
Congratulations to all our Atmospheric Sciences graduate students who recently received presentation awards at the 103rd Annual Meeting of the American Meteorological Society!
Ben Barr received 2nd place for student oral presentations for his talk “Multiscale Air-Sea Interactions in Hurricanes: From Sea-State Dependent Sea Spray to Surface and Boundary Layers in Coupled Atmosphere-Wave-Ocean Model Simulations”, during the 23rd Air-Sea Conference. This study explores multiscale spray heat flux interactions and impacts using fully coupled atmosphere-wave-ocean simulations made using the Unified Wave Interface-Coupled Model (UWIN-CM).
Edoardo Mazza received an honorable mention for student poster presentations for “Multiscale Interactions of the MJO-Jet Stream-Atmospheric Rivers and Their Influence on Western US Rainfall”, during the 11th symposium on the Madden-Julian Oscillation and Sub-Seasonal Monsoon Variability. The study aims to better understand the interaction of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), the North Pacific Jet (NPJ) stream, atmospheric rivers (ARs) and their influence on weather regimes and rainfall distribution over the western US.
Randall Jones won the Outstanding Student Oral Presentation award for his talk “A Hemispheric Analysis of Aerosol Particle-Lightning Relationships”, during the 15th Symposium of Aerosol-Cloud-Climate-Interactions. The study explored the relationship between aerosol concentrations and lightning frequency on a hemispheric scale.
Ajda Savarin won 1st place for student oral presentations at the 11th symposium on the Madden-Julian Oscillation and Sub-Seasonal Monsoon Variability for her talk “MJO Modeling and Prediction: Challenges and Pathways Forward.” This study investigates the effects of the Unified Wave Interface – Coupled Model (UWIN-CM) resolution and atmosphere-ocean coupling on MJO initiation and eastward propagation over the Indo-Pacific warm pool.
