Congratulations go to Jamin Rader and Claire Zarakas both of whom were awarded the 2019 DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF). 

Congratulations to our student weather forecasters who won the national collegiate forecasting contest: The WxChallenge. The WxChallenge has been testing the forecast skills of university students since the fall of 2006.   

As air quality improves, the invisible chemistry happening in the air around us is changing. Skies should clear up as emissions drop, but recent results suggested that declining nitrogen oxides can create an environment where airborne carbon-containing compounds more easily convert into small particles that harm human health. 

Research led by the University of Washington proposes a new idea that may explain why some Antarctic icebergs are tinged emerald green rather than the normal blue, potentially solving a decades-long scientific mystery. 

Isabel McCoy’s presentation title, “Cloud-Aerosol Interactions and Aerosol Variability Near Southern Ocean Low Clouds” won an Outstanding Student Presentation Award (OSPA), which is prestigious award is only granted to the top 5% of student participants. 

Peng Qiaoyun won the Outstanding Student Paper Awards by the 21st Conference on Atmospheric Chemistry, American Meteorological Society (AMS), poster presentation: “In Situ Measurements and Evaluation of Primary Radical Budgets within Wildfire Plumes during WE-CAN.”
  

Adja Savarin’s presentation title, Diurnal Cycle of Precipitation and the MJO over the Maritime Continent: “Tug of War” between the land and sea, is prestigious award is only granted to the top 5% of student participants. 

Undergraduate students Joshua Driscol, Jamin Rader and Dave Bonan were recently awarded Mary Gates Research Scholarships. 

The Simpson Center for the Humanities has awarded doctoral candidate Judy Twedt with a research fellowship to support her work on “Arctic Climate Change through Human Narratives and Data-as-Music”:
